When you look at the label on a CBD product, it’s increasingly rare to have CBD listed as an ingredient. That is to say, quality cannabidiol is usually more descriptive and uses terms such as full-spectrum, broad-spectrum, or isolate. What do these terms mean, and which is the most effective form of CBD?
What is the Most Effective Form of CBD?
For starters, it’s important to mention that the key element of CBD isn’t that it’s isolate or one of the spectrum types. Rather, you need to make sure that your CBD is that it’s properly grown, traced, and lab-tested. Anything that uses dangerous synthetic cannabinoids or which doesn’t cite a third-party lab test is something you can toss out right away. Once you’re able to verify the quality of the CBD itself, you can move on to considering the form of CBD.
Full Spectrum CBD
When you make hemp oil out of raw hemp with no additional processes, the result is full-spectrum CBD. It’s rich in CBD, but also carries the suite of other cannabinoids in trace amounts as well as terpenes, non-cannabinoid organic materials. This is important due to the entourage effect, a concept that holds that hemp is more than the sum of its parts and that all of these compounds boost the efficacy of your CBD. While the entourage effect is not yet supported by rigorous studies, many industry professionals and enthusiasts swear by it.
Broad Spectrum CBD
Broad-spectrum CBD is similar to full-spectrum CBD, and may be the most practical form of CBD overall. It has the full entourage of cannabinoids and terpenes, except that it’s undergone one process to remove all or almost all traces of psychoactive THC. While full-spectrum CBD should never have an appreciable, psychoactive quantity of THC, laws vary from one country and state to the next. As such, the advantage of broad-spectrum CBD is that it sacrifices very little to improve legal compliance.
CBD isolate typically exists in a powdered form wherein the producer separated the CBD from all of the other components of the hemp plant. Most of the advantages of isolate powder involve the ease with which companies can store and transport it. While the entourage effect would have you believe that isolate is inferior, many people do enjoy it and it has some key advantages, such as water solubility. While spectrum oils have a pungent flavor and don’t mix into water, you can easily add a dose of CBD isolate into a bottle of water or a bowl of yogurt.

All of the forms of CBD have their own advantages.
